Copyrighted in 1899, Joplin’s "Maple Leaf Rag" is an early example of American ragtime piano style featuring jaunty, syncopated rhythms, a striding bass line and heavy use of seventh chords. The Maple Leaf was so popular in its day that its day that it went on to become the template used by many subsequent composers.
